How to use it

Choosing and caring for garden tools

Pick the right tool for digging, pruning and tidying, and keep it working.

Step by step

Use a spade for digging and edging, a fork for breaking up soil and lifting.
Prune with clean, sharp secateurs, cutting just above a bud.
Use loppers for branches thicker than a finger.
Clean soil off tools after use and dry them.
Oil metal parts and sharpen blades before storing for winter.

Tips

A stainless steel spade slides through clay soil more easily.
Bypass secateurs give a cleaner cut on live wood.
Hang tools up in the shed to keep edges sharp.

Safety

Wear gloves and stout footwear.
Keep power tool cables away from the cutting line.
