How to use

Clean the pipe end and inside of the fitting with wire wool or a pipe cleaning brush, apply a suitable flux, and assemble. Heat the fitting evenly with a blowtorch and feed solder into the joint until a complete ring shows. Let it cool without moving, then wipe off excess flux.

Safety

Work in a ventilated area, use a heat-resistant mat behind the joint, and keep a fire extinguisher nearby when using a blowtorch.

How to use it

Basic plumbing repairs

Fix leaks, fit pipe fittings and clear drains without calling someone out.

Step by step

Turn off the water and drain the pipe before cutting or undoing anything.
Cut pipe square with a pipe cutter and remove burrs.
For compression fittings, slide on the nut and olive, push the pipe fully in and tighten by hand then a quarter to half turn with a spanner.
For push-fit, use an insert in plastic pipe and push until it clicks.
Turn the water back on slowly and check for leaks.
For blocked drains, try a plunger before chemicals.

Tips

Keep a spare olive and washer set in the house.
Use PTFE tape on threads only.
Label your stopcock so everyone knows where it is.

Safety

Gas pipes and boilers must only be worked on by a Gas Safe engineer.
Drain chemicals are caustic: wear gloves and eye protection.
