How to use it

Using heaters and radiators efficiently

Pick the right heater for the room and keep running costs down.

Step by step

Work out the room size: about 1kW heats 10 to 15 square metres in a typical room.
Choose oil-filled for long steady heat, convector or fan for quick warmth.
Place heaters on a flat surface with space all round.
Use the thermostat and timer, not full power all day.
Bleed radiators if they are cold at the top.

Tips

Radiator foil behind radiators on outside walls reflects heat back.
Close doors to keep heat in the room you are using.
Thermostatic radiator valves let each room run at its own temperature.

Safety

Never cover a heater or dry clothes on it.
Keep heaters at least 1 metre from curtains and furniture.
Fit a carbon monoxide alarm near any fuel-burning heater.
