Using a fire guard
Measure the width of your fire opening before buying: the guard should be wider than the opening and stand steadily on the hearth. Place it in front of the fire whenever the fire is lit and nobody is watching it.
Safety
A fire guard reduces the risk from sparks and accidental contact but is not a substitute for supervision. The guard itself gets hot, so do not touch it while the fire is burning and never hang clothes or towels on it to dry. Never leave young children alone in a room with a lit fire.
