How to use it

Bulbs, plugs, extension leads and lighting

Pick the right bulb and accessories, and know which jobs need an electrician.

Step by step

Check the cap type (B22 bayonet, E27/E14 screw, GU10) and the fitting's maximum wattage.
Choose warm white (2700K) for living areas and cool white (4000K) for kitchens and workspaces.
Turn the light off and let the old bulb cool before changing it.
For plugs, use the fuse rating on the appliance and tighten the cord grip.
Do not plug extension leads into each other.

Tips

LED bulbs use far less power than halogen and last years longer.
Use bulbs marked dimmable on dimmer switches.
Outdoor sockets and lights need the right IP rating.

Safety

Changing sockets, switches or fixed wiring should be done by a qualified electrician (Part P in England and Wales).
