How to use it

Insulating the loft and stopping draughts

Cut heat loss and bills by topping up loft insulation and sealing draughts.

Step by step

Measure the loft floor area and the depth of any insulation already there.
Aim for a total depth of around 270mm of mineral wool.
Lay the first layer between the joists, without squashing it.
Lay a second layer across the joists to reach the full depth.
Leave gaps at the eaves for air flow and keep insulation off downlights.
For draughts, fit seal strips to doors and windows, a brush to the letterbox and a draught excluder at the bottom of doors.

Tips

Keep a walkway: lay boards on raised supports, not on squashed insulation.
Insulate pipes and the water tank in the loft, but not underneath the tank.
Find draughts with a lit incense stick on a windy day.

Safety

Wear gloves, long sleeves and a mask when handling mineral wool.
Only step on joists or boards, never between them.
