How to use it

Using hand tools safely and well

Get the most out of saws, screwdrivers, spanners and measuring tools.

Step by step

Measure twice and mark with a sharp pencil before cutting.
Clamp the work so both hands are free.
Let saws do the work: long, steady strokes, without forcing.
Use the right screwdriver tip so screws do not strip.
Keep blades sharp and replace snap-off blades often.
Clean and dry tools after use and store them in a box or bag.

Tips

A combination square gives accurate 90 and 45 degree lines.
Hold a spirit level both ways round to check it reads true.
A drop of oil stops tools rusting in a damp shed.

Safety

Cut away from your body.
Wear eye protection when striking or chiselling.
