A 200g sleeve of Trollull steel wool in grade 1. Use it for sanding, polishing and cleaning wood, metal, plastic and stone. It is useful for de-nibbing wood after priming and before the first coat of paint, for polishing waxed wood, and with a varnish remover to strip old varnish from antiques. Trollull makes steel wool in 9 grades.

How to use it

Filling, sanding and getting surfaces ready

Good preparation is most of a good finish. Here is how to fill and sand.

Step by step

Scrape out loose material from cracks and holes.
Dampen the area slightly for powder filler, or use ready-mixed straight from the tub.
Press filler in with a filling knife and leave it slightly proud.
Let it dry fully: deep holes may need two fills.
Sand flush with fine paper wrapped round a block.
Dust off and spot-prime the filled areas before painting.

Tips

Flexible filler is better for gaps between walls and woodwork.
Stain block stops water marks and smoke stains showing through new paint.
Sand in good side light so you can see bumps.

Safety

Wear a dust mask when sanding.
Do not sand old paint that may contain lead; seek advice first.
